University of Michigan star striker Soony Saad has decided to forgo the rest of his college eligibility and pursue a professional soccer career. The Arab-American Muslim just completed a highly successful freshman season in which he led the nation with 19 goals scored and also led his team to the men’s soccer final four. According to soccer insider Ives Galarcep, Saad has already left school and is in Belgium trying out for the Belgian giants Angerlecht. In addition, he is reportedly scheduled to try out for German giants Bayern Munich, and two other German teams, 1860 Munich and SC Freiburg.

Saad has been in the national spotlight ever since he was named Gatorade Boys High School Soccer Player of the Year his senior season in suburban Detroit. His older brother, Hamoody, is a midfielder on the U of M team and will be a returning junior this fall. Now with the loss of Soony Saad, as well as graduating senior striker Justin Meram, Michigan’s soccer rebirth just may have to go back to square one. Meanwhile, for Soony Saad, this represents a difficult but most likely necessary step in taking his considerable skills from the back pages of the American sports publications to the front pages of Europe.
