From Classmates- to Graduate DVM’S- to Husband and Wife

Sometimes fate has a way of producing marvelous results.  Tuskegee University College of Veterinary Medicine graduates Idris Bilal El-Amin, son of Imam Abdullah and Cheryl El-Amin of Detroit, Michigan and Colette Anita Kirk, daughter of Dr. William and Hattie Kirk of Birmingham, Alabama, were wed this past June in the bride’s hometown of Birmingham, Alabama.  Father of the groom, Imam El-Amin is co-founder, chairman, and assistant imam of the Detroit’s Muslim Center.  Dr. William Kirk, also a veterinarian, is a member of Birmingham’s Masjidul-Quran.  Both masajid identify with the leadership of Imam W. Deen Mohammed, which is truly a blessing.  Idris and Colette had no knowledge that their lives of similar heritage would connect and bond into this union.

Idris and Colette attended different undergrad schools before they met at Tuskegee. Idris attended and graduated from Alabama A & M University in Huntsville, and Colette graduated from Howard University in Washington D.C.  They enrolled in Tuskegee, where they saw, met and fell in love.  After their graduation in Tuskegee, marriage in Birmingham, and honeymoon in Aruba, the couple jumped immediately into their careers.  They moved to Winston-Salem, North Carolina where Idris is pursuing a residency in laboratory animals and research at Wake Forest Baptist Hospital.  Colette is also plying her trade practicing veterinary medicine at a Veterinary Clinic.

The families of both newlyweds are ecstatic that ALLAH has seen fit to allow this couple to dedicate themselves to each other as man and wife, according to the laws of Almighty G’d.

Both fathers-in-law were blessed to play significant roles in the graduation and wedding activities of their children.  Imam Abdullah El-Amin was honored to perform the wedding ceremony of Idris and Colette at a beautiful patio ceremony in Downtown Birmingham; and Dr William Kirk gave the charge to the new Doctors of Veterinary medicine as part of the commencement exercises.  Dr William Kirk happens to also be an alumnus of Tuskegee’s College of Veterinary Medicine.  The pride on Dr. Kirks face as he watched his daughter follow in his footsteps was unmistakable.

The couple plan to be in Winston-Salem for at least two years as Idris completes his residency.  After that, the sky is the limit.  Our community wishes Dr. Idris and Dr. Colette the very best as they begin their lives together.
