Rizwan Syed receives President’s Volunteer Service Award

Niles West High School student Rizwan Syed has been honored for his exemplary volunteer service with a President’s Volunteer Service Award. The award, which recognizes Americans of all ages who have volunteered significant amounts of their time to serve their communities and their country, was granted by The Prudential Spirit of Community Awards program on behalf of President Barack Obama. At Niles West, Rizwan has been involved in S.A.D.D. Club, Indo-Pak Club, Go Green Recycle Club and Quran Study. He is also a member of National Honor Society and Spanish National Honor Society.

Rizwan volunteered 100 hours at Cambridge Nursing and Rehab Center in Skokie. He was inspired to volunteer after reading an article on the lives of senior citizens that detailed how lonely they were. He said, “I started volunteering in May. I would help the seniors get from place to place. I would also talk to them, play games with them and help them with their therapy. In addition, I would read to them and put up posters for their enjoyment. I met everyone there and am on a first name basis with most of them.”

The Prudential Spirit of Community Awards, sponsored by Prudential Financial in partnership with the National Association of Secondary School Principals (NASSP), recognize middle level and high school students across American for outstanding volunteer service.

New York councilman calls for halal in schools

New York City Councilman Rafael Espinal (D-Brooklyn) has urged the city  to expand school lunch menus to include halal food options for Muslim students.

About 20% of city schoolchildren – 170,000 students – are Muslim and often go a full day without eating school lunch because of religious dietary restrictions, Espinal said. He said the proposal for universal free lunch, which was introduced by Public Advocate Letitia James earlier this month, should be inclusive of all students according to faith-based needs.

“While there is an ongoing conversation of providing free lunch to every student, we must also be progressive in instituting lunches that respect the faiths of New York City’s diverse population,” Espinal said.
