Michigan Interfaith Remembrance of Newtown

December 20, 2012 by

Editor’s note:  This article is to report an event which will not have happened as we go to print and will have happened before TMO is available to our readers.  We are still reporting it because of its relevance and timeliness.

The Interfaith community in Michigan commemorates the tragic Newtown, Connecticut, shooting with a prayer service and candle light vigil on Thursday December 20th.
Today the issue of gun violence is on our minds. Our hearts are broken.

The tragic news of the murder of so many innocents in a school makes us conscious of our responsibility to keep our loved ones safe- especially our dear children.
We know one thing: the answer to gun violence is not more guns.

Out of concern for our children and their precious futures, we must prayerfully look for effective solutions to so much violence, so much of which is directed at our children.
Out of concern for the people of our nation and for our community in particular, we, as members of diverse faiths in Southeastern Michigan, come together to remember the departed souls and to pray for peace in our communities.

Moreover, by coming together to memorialize the victims, we want to raise our consciousness so such atrocities are not perpetrated again against the innocent in our communities.
The Interfaith Leadership Council of Metropolitan Detroit, together with the Michigan Muslim Community Council, the Jewish Community Relations Council and the Women’s Interfaith Solutions for Dialog and Outreach in Metro-Detroit, along with all people of faith, come together to offer solace and comfort to all those whose hearts are today burdened by so much grief.
