chicago_karim2_400The National Football League’s Indianapolis Colts signed running back Abdul “Deji” Karim to their active roster this week. The move was precipitated by an injury to back-up running back Donald Brown and fullback Robert Hughes that resulted in their placement on the injured reserve list. Karim will be called upon to back up starting running back Vick Ballard.

The 5-9, 203-pound back Karim originally joined the Colts on waivers on April 30, 2012 before being waived-injured on Sept. 10th of this year. He entered the league as a sixth round draft pick (180th overall) of the Jacksonville Jaguars in 2010. He then spent the better part of two seasons with the Jaguars before being released. Karim has played a total of 23 NFL games in his career.

Karim graduated from Southern Illinois University where he finished third in the voting for the 2009 Walter Payton Award (awarded annually to the most outstanding offensive player in the Division I Football Championship Subdivision). Prior to that he attended Northeastern Oklahoma A&M. As a high schooler he starred at Putnam City North in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma.
